In 1759, the British defeated the Prussian forces in the German town of Minden. To commemorate their victory at the Battle of Minden, the British commissioned Jamsetji Bomanji Wadia of the Wadia Group to build a ship. HMS Minden was built in 1810 at the Duncan Docks in Mumbai, India.

Francis Scott Key penned The Defense of Ft. McHenry which became the lyrics for The Star-Spangled Banner, the American National Anthem when he was held prisoner on the HMS Minden in 1812.
